Based in New York City, Parsons Dance Company was founded on July 17, 1985 by David Parsons and lighting designer Howell Binkley. Since its inception, Parsons Dance Company has toured on six continents. Parsons Dance Company is the only dance company in history to have performed at all three Spoleto Festivals (Italy, Australia, and the United States) in one season.
Since 1985, Parsons Dance Company has toured an average of 32 weeks per year in 235 cities in 30 countries on six continents, performing in front of millions of people. Millions of people watched Parsons Dance Company perform live in Times Square for the 24 Hour New Year’s Eve Millennium Event on international television. In New York City, Parsons Dance Company performed at the Joyce Theater, City Center, New Victory Theater, Central Park Summer Stage, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and World Trade Center.
Parsons Dance Company has been featured on PBS, Bravo, A&E, and the Discovery Channel, and on December 31, 1999, the company performed live in Times Square, New York City, as part of an international broadcast of the 24-hour Millennium New Year’s Celebration event The event was viewed by millions of viewers around the world. It was part of the international coverage of the Millennium New Year celebrations.
The ensemble consists of nine full-time dancers. The repertoire includes over 80 songs, 20 of which are original compositions commissioned from composers and musicians such as Dave Matthews, Michael Gordon, Milton Nascimento, John Mackey, and Phil Woods. Parsons Dance Company has worked with Julie Taymor, William Ivey Long, Annie Leibovitz, Donna Karan, Alex Katz, and many others.
The company offers master classes in modern, ballet, and jazz technique; classes and demonstrations of repertory and production elements; and workshops and seminars on nutrition, fitness, and dance. The company also offers post-performance discussions and the Parsons Dance Study Guide, a dance education resource for faculty and students developed in collaboration with the Ferst Center for the Arts.
In addition, Parsons Dance Company offers an annual intensive summer dance workshop in New York City for professional and professional dancers. These workshops are designed to allow participants to learn contemporary dance, ballet technique, and Parsons repertoire while working alongside Parsons dancers.
