The dance company Urban Bush Women located in the city of New York is a remarkable example of the work that is being done in dance in USA. It is a very good company to audition.
The Urban Bush Women’s mission is the broad promotion and dissemination of dance art and repertoire through a stable community. It supports new audiences and their national and international performances, in full artistic and creative autonomy.
Urban Bush Women (UBW), founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is a non-profit dance company based in Brooklyn, New York, and is the only professional dance company for African American women. Urban Bush Women (UBW) aims to bring to life untold and unknown stories through dance. As part of the African Diaspora community, UBW works to redress the balance of power within and outside of the dance community through a women-centered approach. UBW’s work helps people understand the world and act within it. They bring a bold and provocative perspective to our artistic work. Their work encourages critical, creative, and reflective thinking.
The ensemble has performed dance works by Zollar and many other choreographers, many of which focus on the experiences of African women. UBW is committed to highlighting the strength, beauty and power of the African Diaspora. African continental dance is characterized by a complex use of polyphonic rhythms, body weight, pelvic and spinal articulation, and an emphasis on whole-body movement. Urban Bushwomen’s technique is based on these principles.
Urban Bush Women inspires artists, activists, audiences, and communities through performance, artist development, education, and community engagement. Ongoing projects include the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), BOLD (Builders, Organisers and Leaders through Dance) and the Dance Centre initiative. UBW highlights and addresses issues of equity in dance and America by promoting artistic legacy, reflecting the voices of marginalized populations and people of color, and providing a platform for experimental art makers to impact the entire arts ecosystem.
The cast of Urban Bush Women dance company is made up of African American women dancers and for the most part the technique they dominate is mostly contemporary technique.
The structure of the company is a democratic contemporary ensemble with no ranking distinction.
The style of the company Urban Bush Women can be classified as contemporary dance and theatre dance and the movement technique that its artistic director Jawole Willa Jo Zollar mainly looks for in dancers during auditions is mostly contemporary technique.
