Urban Bush Women (UBW), founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is a non-profit dance company based in Brooklyn, New York, and is the only professional dance company for African American women. As part of the African Diaspora community, UBW works to redress the balance of power within and outside of the dance community through a women-centered approach. The ensemble has performed dance works by Zollar and many other choreographers, many of which focus on the experiences of African women. UBW is committed to highlighting the strength, beauty and power of the African Diaspora. African continental dance is characterized by a complex use of polyphonic rhythms, body weight, pelvic and spinal articulation, and an emphasis on whole-body movement. Urban Bushwomen’s technique is based on these principles.

Urban Bush Women inspires artists, activists, audiences, and communities through performance, artist development, education, and community engagement. Ongoing projects include the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), BOLD (Builders, Organisers and Leaders through Dance) and the Dance Centre initiative. UBW highlights and addresses issues of equity in dance and America by promoting artistic legacy, reflecting the voices of marginalized populations and people of color, and providing a platform for experimental art makers to impact the entire arts ecosystem.
