The The Rockettes’s mission is the broad promotion and dissemination of dance art and repertoire through a stable community. Open to all styles, dance languages and general movement arts, it encourages American and international creativity. It supports new audiences and their national and international performances, in full artistic and creative autonomy.
The Rockettes are an American precision dance group funded in 1925 in the city of St. Louis. The first performances of the company were at 1932 Radio City Music Hall in NYC in 1932. They use to perform in the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular and in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City every year. Since the first New York City Christmas Spectacular in 1933, more than 3,000 women have performed in the Rockettes.
The Rockettes also launched the Rockettes Summer Intensive program for aspiring Rockettes dancers.
The company creation was influnced by the Tiller Girls, another precision dance group funded in the 1890s. In 1900, Tiller sent the first girls to the United States, and soon three groups were performing on Broadway In 1922, after seeing the Tiller Rockettes’ show at the Ziegfeld Follies, choreographer Russell Marquardt asked the American dancers to create their own version. Marquardt later commented, “I would have been really surprised if I had met American girls who were tall and long-legged and could do very complicated kicks and eye strikes.” The girls were originally known as the Missouri Rockets. After businessman Roxy took them to the Roxy Theater in New York City, they became known as the Roxy Group. Later, Roxy and Radio City Music Hall parted company and became the Rockettes.
