Arthur Mitchell who became the first African American dancer in a major ballet company, always had the dream of to establish a classical ballet school in Harlem for the poor, mostly black children of New York City, where he grew up. Shortly thereafter, Mitchell made a down payment on an abandoned garage at 466 West 152nd Street and converted it into the headquarters building that still stands today.

Originally founded as a school, Dance Theatre of Harlem, an ensemble of African American ballet dancers, coupled with funds from donations to support the school, had its first full season in 1974. That same year, the company premiered at Sadler’s Wells Theatre; in 1984, Dance Theatre of Harlem presented Creole’s masterpiece, Giselle, set in the Louisiana swamps of the 1840s; in 1988, the company toured the Soviet Union for five weeks, including performances in Moscow, Tbilisi, Leningrad He departed for South Africa in 1992 for the «Dance Across the Barrier» tour, a program of the same name that continues to this day. The «South African Suite» with the Soweto String Quartet became a signature piece for the next several years, and in 1997, while management was negotiating a contract extension with the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), the company’s dancers went on strike.

Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrated its 40th anniversary in February 2009, and from 2009 to 2012, Dance USA supported its national and international tours as the second company of the DTH School Professional Development Programme. Since DTH relaunched as a full company, it has produced world premieres by Pickett, Alleyne, Widman-Davis, Davis, Great Morley, and GarlandDance Theatre of Harlem’s new company will also perform ballets by Balanchine, Duato, Byrd, Dove, Harkins, and Ailey.
