Ballet Hispanico is an American dance company based in Manhattan, New York, founded in 1970 by Puerto Rican/Mexican American dancer/choreographer Tina Ramirez to perform dances that reflect the Spanish and Latin American experience. She describes herself as “the leading authority on Spanish cultural dance in the United States. The company has presented more than 75 productions to audiences of more than 2 million people in the United States, Europe, and South America. He has commissioned nearly 80 works, purchased 11 works, and collaborated with 45 choreographers from around the world.
In August 2009, Ballet Hispánico hired Eduardo Villaro as its second artistic director after 1970-born Tina Ramirez. a dancer and teacher with the organization since 1985, Villaro was previously a member of Ballet Hispánico and worked in Chicago with Luna He founded and directed Negra Dance Theatre for 10 years.
Ramirez’s vision was to create a place for American dance in contemporary Latino culture, much as Alvin Ailey did for the black community. During her 39 years as artistic director, she has assembled 50 choreographers from diverse backgrounds, combining the diverse skills of ballet, contemporary, jazz, and ethnic dancers to create a contemporary interpretation of Latin culture. His world-class artists include ballet dancers Vicente Nebrada and Alberto Alonso, contemporary dancers Tari Biti and Ana Socorro, folk dancers Paco Fernandez and Jose Coronado, and Broadway actors Graciela Daniels and Ann Link responded to the idea. They are here.” He is always willing to give new talent a chance, including William Wittner, now artistic director of the Kansas City Ballet; Susan Marshall, a MacArthur Award winner; Ramon Oller, president of Metros Danza in Spain; and Pedro Ruiz, then a member of the ballet but now working independently. They are generous in giving them a chance. Several artistic directors are willing to give them a chance to “nurture them in the early stages of their careers.”
The dance school offers classes in flamenco, Spanish classical dance, ballet, and modern technique. It offers specialized and general courses and classes for preschoolers through adults.
