English National Ballet presents Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, with music by Jules Massenet. Alina Cojocaru dances Manon opposite Joseph Caley as Des Grieux. The provider identifies this as an archive recording made at Manchester Opera House in October 2018. The story includes mature themes; consult the provider’s guidance before watching with children.

The story, without the ending
In eighteenth-century France, Manon and the student Des Grieux fall in love. Her brother Lescaut sees another opportunity: a wealthy man, Monsieur GM, can offer Manon material security. The competing demands of affection, money and survival pull the lovers into an increasingly dangerous situation.
What to watch for
LookBallet viewing guide: follow how the relationship changes through touch. In each duet, ask who initiates a movement, who offers support and who seems to resist it. Compare those private exchanges with the characters’ behaviour in a crowd. This is a useful way to read the drama even before you know the steps or the full plot.
