By the 16th century, dance had become an important element of German culture, with a wide variety of dances being performed at court balls and other events.
The 18th century saw the rise of the waltz, which quickly became the most popular dance in Germany. Other popular dances of the time included the minuet and the polka. The 19th century saw the development of several new dance styles, including the tango and the foxtrot.

This new form of dance quickly spread throughout Europe, and by the early 1700s, German ballet masters were choreographing their own works based on the French style.
The German ballet tradition reached its height in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when such masters as August Bournonville and George Balanchine were creating works that are still performed today. Since then, ballet in Germany has continued to evolve, with new styles and influences being introduced from all over the world.
