Florida state is one of the most important and influential states in the world of dance and ballet. From its world-renowned schools to its professional companies, Florida state has a long and rich history in the world of dance.
Founded in 1961 by Edward Villella, Miami City Ballet is one of the foremost professional ballet companies in the United States. Under the artistic direction of Lourdes Lopez since 2012, the company has 50 dancers and an active repertoire of more than 100 ballets. Miami City Ballet is the resident ballet company of South Florida, where it performs for an annual audience of more than 200,000. The company tours nationally and internationally, appearing regularly at such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and New York City’s Lincoln Center.
In addition to its performances, Miami City Ballet is committed to education and outreach programs that provide children and adults with opportunities to experience the joy of dance. The company’s innovative educational initiatives include free performances for school children and an acclaimed summer program for aspiring young dancers.
Florida State University has been home to a world-renowned ballet program for more than 50 years. Under the direction of acclaimed choreographer Robert Battle, the program provides students with a comprehensive education in the art of ballet, from technique and history to performance and choreography.
