Czech Republic & Dance

Czech Republic has a long and rich history in ballet. For many centuries, the country was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and as such, was exposed to the influences of French and Italian ballet. In the 19th century, Czech ballet began to develop its own distinctive style, influenced by folk dances and music. Today, Czech ballet is world-renowned for its technical excellence and expressive power. Many of the world’s most celebrated ballet dancers and choreographers hail from the Czech Republic, including Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Anna Pavlova. The Czech Republic is also home to some of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies, including the Prague State Opera Ballet and the National Theatre Ballet.
