Dance and ballet have been present in Canada since the country’s earliest days. Indigenous peoples have always had their own traditional dances, which were often performed as part of religious or cultural ceremonies. European settlers brought over their own dance traditions, which were further influenced by the African slaves who were brought over to work on the plantations.
Over time, these various dance traditions began to merge and evolve, and Canadian dance began to develop its own unique character. The first professional ballet company in Canada was founded in 1851, and since then, dance and ballet have continued to grow and thrive in the country.
Today, there are dozens of professional ballet companies and thousands of dancers in Canada, performing a wide variety of styles. Canadian dance has something to offer everyone, from the traditional to the avant-garde.
