Armenia & Dance

Armenia has a long and rich history of ballet, dating back to the 19th century. Armenian dancers and choreographers have made a significant impact on the world of ballet, and the country has produced many internationally acclaimed dancers. Armenian ballet has been influenced by a number of different cultures, including Russian, French, and Italian.

The first professional Armenian ballet company was founded in 1883, by Martin Simonian. The company quickly gained popularity, and began performing all over Europe. Armenian ballet soon began to influence other countries, and choreographers from Armenia began to work in Russia, France, and Italy.

One of the most famous Armenian ballet dancers was Maria Plisetskaya. She was born in Moscow to Armenian parents, and began her training at the age of six. She joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 1943, and quickly rose to prominence. She went on to have a hugely successful career, performing all over the world.

Plisetskaya was not the only Armenian dancer to achieve international fame. In the 20th century, a number of Armenian dancers and choreographers made their mark on the world of ballet. These include Vagharshak Ohanian, who founded the Yerevan State Ballet School; Armen Minasian, who was the first Armenian dancer to join the Paris Opera Ballet; and Ruben Vardanyan, who served as the director of the Varda Ballet Company in Yerevan.

Today, Armenian ballet is thriving, and the country has produced a number of world-renowned dancers. Armenia is also home to a number of ballet schools, which are training the next generation of dancers.

Did you know that…?

Armenian Dance is native to the Armenian people and has been practiced throughout the country’s history. Armenian Dance is an important part of Armenian culture and is often performed at Armenian festivals and other cultural events.

There are many different types of Armenian dances, each with its own unique steps and movements. Armenian dances can be divided into two main categories: folk dances and court dances.

Folk dances are typically performed by groups of people, often in traditional clothing. Court dances were usually performed by professional dancers for the royals and nobility.

The most popular and well-known Armenian folk dances are the horovel, kochari, yarkhushta, and pattin. Horovel is a circle dance that is often performed at weddings and other festive occasions. Kochari is a lively folk dance that is often performed in a group. Yarkhushta is a folk dance that is traditionally performed by young girls. Pattin is a slower, more graceful folk dance that is often performed by couples.

Armenian court dances were typically more formal and elegant than folk dances. The most popular Armenian court dances were the bazin, gavotte, and minuet. Bazin was a dance that was often performed by the nobility. Gavotte was a dance that was often performed by the royal family. Minuet was a dance that was often performed by couples.
