The dance company New York City Ballet located in the city of New York is a remarkable example of the work that is being done in dance in USA. It is a very good company to audition.

The New York City Ballet’s mission is the broad promotion and dissemination of dance art and repertoire through a stable community. Open to all styles, dance languages and general movement arts, it encourages American and international creativity. It supports new audiences and their national and international performances, in full artistic and creative autonomy.

The New York City Ballet (NYCB) was founded in 1948 by choreographers George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Balanchine and Jerome Robbins are considered the founding choreographers of the company. City Ballet merged with the earlier American Ballet School Productions in 1934, American Ballet Company in 1935, and Ballet Caravan in 1936 to form American Ballet Caravan in 1941 and Ballet Caravan in 1946.
In a letter written in 1946, Kirstein wrote, «My sole purpose is to have Balanchine do what he wants, the way he wants,» and he served as the company’s executive director from 1946 to 1989, using his organizational and fundraising skills to grow and maintain the company.

In 1948, the company changed its name to the New York City Ballet and became a resident of New York City, the center of music and theater. [Due to its success, the company moved to the New York State Theatre (now the David H. Koch Theatre), which was designed by Philip Johnson based on Balanchine’s designs. City Ballet became the first ballet company in the United States to have two permanent performance venues. Balanchine founded the School of American Ballet (S.A.B.) for the company.
Balanchine’s move to the National Theatre allowed his choreographic creativity to flourish, and his work remained central to the company’s repertoire until his death in 1983. After creating works for Broadway, he worked closely with choreographer Jerome Robbins, who rejoined the company in 1969.

The New York Ballet still has the largest repertoire of any ballet company in the United States. It presents more than 60 ballets at Lincoln Center in the winter and spring and more than 20 ballets in Saratoga Springs in the summer. City Ballet has presented The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Since its inception, City Ballet has nurtured many great dancers.
