Its reputation is credited with the creation of the Spanish National Ballet (now National Ballet of Spain, BNE), one of the first cultural decisions taken by the then Adolfo Suarez government before the first democratic elections in Spain. With Antonio Gades as its first director since its inception in 1978, BNE was born out of a desire to be a Spanish folk dance company, a global ambassador of that tradition. Although there have been many directors throughout its history, the history of the National Ballet has grown steadily, always enriching modern Spanish dance with its ancient dance and music heritage.
