In 1939, Pleasants and Chase set out to create «a large company with a varied repertoire,» and together with a small group from the Moldavian Ballet, they formed Ballet Theatre, which gave its first performance on January 11, 1940. Despite financial difficulties, Chess expanded the company’s repertoire to include famous full-length ballets and original works; in 1945, Oliver Smith joined Ballet Theatre as Chess’s assistant director.
In 1957, the company changed its name to American Ballet Theatre. Baryshnikov presented many classical ballets and revived and strengthened the classical tradition; in 1989, Jane Herman and Oliver Smith succeeded Baryshnikov as artistic directors, and in 1992, Kevin McKenzie was named director. Mackenzie favored traditional ballet audiences and focused on full-length narrative ballets. He kept the company afloat through a period of financial instability, and in 2004 he established a formal ballet school, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School; in January 2009, Mackenzie appointed Alexei Ratmansky, who had not had a choreographer of his own for some time, as resident artist.
