Sleep at least eight hours the night before the audition
A full night’s sleep gives you the energy and focus to dance your best. If the audition is in the morning, set an alarm so you have enough time to prepare and get to the audition location on time.
Have a good breakfast
A balanced breakfast, containing proteins, fats and healthy carbohydrates, gives you more energy to dance. A good breakfast for the day of the audition might include, for example, hard-boiled eggs, a glass of milk, and a bowl of oatmeal with fruit or Greek yogurt mixed with nuts, seeds, and wild berries. If you don’t have time to eat breakfast at home, you can also stop at a fast food place and buy something quickly. Eating something is better than not eating anything.
Stay focused and calm
In this situation everyone experiences some nerves, but don’t let that feeling overwhelm you. Take a few deep breaths and try to do the best you can and you will feel good for sure. If you unload your worries you will be able to react better to each part of the audition and your dance will be better.
Arrive early at the audition location
The staff of the organization always prefer punctual dancers. Thus, in addition to finding the place of the audition without rushing, you will have time to warm up well.
Choose the best outfit to wear during the audition
You should wear something that suits your style while being comfortable dancing. If necessary, adapt your choice to the rules of the auditions and the dress codes that they impose. And don’t forget that the judges will want to see your body and watch your lines and movement. For a classical audition she wears tights and a leotard and for modern, jazz and ballet styles she wears leggings and leotards. Some auditions are more rigorous than others and want their candidates to present a uniform and homogeneous image. So, if in doubt, ask the organization if the clothing must have a specific color. Also wear appropriate footwear. If you’re auditioning for jazz dance, you need jazz shoes. Pointe shoes are ideal for ballet auditions. But in general, choose shoes for dancing that are as comfortable as possible and that are also in good condition. If you’re not sure what kind of shoes are appropriate, be sure to ask a member of the audition team.
Stretch well before and after the audition
You cannot dance with rigid limbs and muscles and without preparation. Unfortunately, most auditions only have open spaces for dancers to stretch and warm up, so you’ll need to stretch more and better. Heat as much as you can.
Observe how the judges react to the other dancers
If there are other people in front of you during the audition tests, observe them and see how the selection board reacts to them. Some judges also survey the audience as they wait their turn and others dance. Pay special attention to their facial expressions, body language and behavior and try to avoid making the same mistakes as those dancers. And if you’re prone to habits like excessive inactivity or antisocial body language, try to disguise it so it won’t be noticed by the judges. If looking at the judges makes you uncomfortable, stop and distract your mind by focusing on something else.
Do not lower your guard from the moment you enter the room
Before the dance class begins, for example, the court is already observing and evaluating the aspiring dancers from the moment they enter the room. They analyze how he walks, if he stretches and how he does it, if he carries many personal items with him, such as a bag, water, slippers, a towel, etc. Also, if it is an orderly person placing personal items. But above all, there is a tendency to analyze the facial expression of the dancer when he believes that he is not being observed, because that is when we are more relaxed and we are more us. It is when nerves or security, insecurity or arrogance, laziness or discipline are shown. In general, people are in the small details when we lower our guard. That is why there is a popular saying that a person is known at the table eating and at the game.
Stand in the front in front of the selection board
The audition staff will more easily recognize dancers when they are standing if they approach the court, standing in the front rows. And if you do sit down, doing it in one of the front seats will allow you to better show off your skills and draw the attention of the judges.
